Nightlife
I have spent a great majority of my life in and around bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants. My Godfather was a lifelong bartender and as a young boy I would often have lunch at whatever place he was currently working at. During my senior year in High school I took on my first job in a nightclub working for a place called “Shooters” in Hoboken promoting for their teen night. Since that time I have worked at many different bars and clubs primarily as a Doorman.
It is no wonder that as an artist I have always closely inspected and contemplated the visual stimulation that surrounds the nightlife scene. The Glow of a neon sign on the night pavement, the stark contrast of a well-lit window playing of the dark brick of a building, these components are so attractive in unto themselves, so wanting to paint them just comes naturally.
There is more to this series beyond the visual appeal though. I am very fond of the service industry and the people that inhabit that world. I am also attracted to the feeling of nostalgia in regards to the night out or catching up with friends for a drink. I want you to sense the laughter that is happening inside the bar, the handshakes and hugs at the beginning and end of the night. I met my wife in a bar in New York City, “The Garden Tavern” back in 1995 and till this day we enjoy escaping, she and I to sit at a bar somewhere and discuss where life is taking us. Many of the bars that I paint are bars that she and I have visited and many are from nights out with my friends. I look back upon these paintings and relive some fantastic experiences.
Cheers,
Sean
